Prediction Principles

Prediction principles are a basic combinatorial tool in set theory, allowing one, roughly speaking, to forestall ``many'' possible difficulties by taking only a ``few'' precautions. They have found many applications to topology. I will give an elementary introduction to the principle \diamondsuit and some of its relatives.
