MCM 2012: Feb 10-13
The Mathematical Contest in Modelling (MCM)
The MCM is an international contest where teams of
three undergraduate students use their mathematical and computer skills to
model real world problems.
NUI Galway's participation is coordinated by
Louise Nolan,
Niall Madden,
Jerome Sheahan,
and Michael
Tuite, of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied
Mathematics.

About the MCM:
In the early hours (GMT) of Friday, 10th of Feb 2012 approximately 2,500 teams of 3
undergraduate students will be presented with a choice of two "real world"
problems. They choose one, and develop a model that can be used to make some
sensible and useful predictions about the system.
The team prepares a report describing their model and giving the
results of any computer simulations. They may use any
inanimate source of help and information: computers,
software, references, web sites, books, etc.
The report is mailed to the contest organisers (COMAP) on Monday 13th.
All students who successfully participate receive a
certificate. The special commendations
Honourable Mention (approx top 25%) and Meritorious
(approx top 10%) are also given. About 8 teams are
designated as Outstanding: these receive a plaque, and their solutions are published
at an international conference, probably in the US.
The competition starts soon, so we need to start selecting teams as
soon as possible. We would like to have two at least two teams again this
year. If you are interested, please contact one of Louise, Niall,
Jerome or Michael to to register your interest.
Results of MCM 2011
NUI Galway was represented by three teams in the 2011 competition.
- Team 12128 of Mark Coughlan (2nd Applied Mathematics &
Physics), Adam Ivansky (3rd Physics) and Patrick Ryan (3rd
Mathematics and Education) tackled Problem A on the optimal
design of a snowboard course, and were awarded "Successful
Participant".
- Team 12140 of Fergal Keany (2nd Applied Mathematics &
Physics), William Garnsworthy (2nd Applied Mathematics & Physics) and
Lewy Blue (2nd Mathematics and Computing) also did Problem A, and were
designated Mritorious Winners!
- Team 12139 of Brian Burns (3rd Financial Mathematics and
Economics), Martina Carroll (2nd Financial Mathematics and
Economics) and Colin Morley (3rd Financial Mathematics & Economics)
worked on problem B (optimal placement of
VHF repeaters) and were awarded an "Honourable Mention".

Galway teams 12140 and 12128 worked on Problem A, on the optimal
