(a) the name Mathematics is reserved for the traditional honours course;
(b) the name Mathematical Studies is used for an undifferentiated course in which pass or honours is awarded on a common programme;
(c) the name Applied Mathematical Science is used for the pass course (in which it is not possible to obtain honours).
Admission to these levels is contingent on first year performance and requires permission of the Mathematics Department. It is not allowed to combine (a) and (b) but in rare cases one of these can be combined with (c). Admission to the MA in Mathematics requires either (i) honours in (a) or (ii) a good honours in (b) and a Higher Diploma in Mathematics. Note that (b) is excellent preparation for a career as teacher of mathematics in a secondary school.
