Research Interests
Statistical Modelling, especially
- The development of fitting zero-modified models, that
is, zero-inflated models where
the zero ``inflation'' parameter may be negative.
- The
development of log-likelihood based methods for model comparison that
are based
upon multiple simple hypothesis tests rather than the more
traditional single multiple hypothesis test. .
Teaching
Over the years, I have taught a wide variety of mathematics and
statistics courses to students at all levels. Currently I am involved
with:
- MA419: An introductory bio-statistics course to
enivironmental sceince and microbiology students
- The
``Bridging Course'' in Mathematics: This is a special course given
to students that are allowed entry directly into third year engineering
programs on the basis that they have received good level 7 degrees
elsewhere. Its purpose is to bring the students up to speed with
mathematics.
- The ``Access Foundation Course in
Mathematics'': This is a special course given to students that are
considering entering NUI, Galway as mature students. This is a very
rewarding course to teach---people with little or no mathematical
knowledge at the start of the course are brought, in an eight month
period, to a relatively high level of mathematics ability, comparable to
that of students finishing first year university programs.
- The Generic Skills Course in Statistics: The module aims to
give post-graduate students, from any discipline, possibly with little
or no previous knowledge of statistics the opportunity to develop a deep
understanding of the basic principals underlying statistics, and to
develop an excellent working knowledge of how to perform a wide variety
of statistical tasks:
