Proceedings of the First Summer Galway Topology Colloquium.
Introduction
by Aisling McCluskey
The First Summer Topology Colloquium was hosted by the National University
of
Ireland (Galway) during July 1997 and united the centres of topological
research within the British Isles in a meaningful and productive way.
Researchers from Belfast, Oxford, Birmingham, Switzerland and Canada
attended
the meeting, learning much state-of-the-art mathematics in an intensive
week of lectures, discussions and workshops. The intention is that this
event will rotate annually among the various `local' topological centres,
with
the 1998 Colloquium scheduled to take place in Oxford.
A unique feature of this inaugural meeting was the special emphasis on
the training aspect of workshop sessions for graduate students. These were
considered an invaluable and integral part of the learning experience and
will
remain central to subsequent meetings. Such sessions coupled with research
talks provided a useful daily balance in Colloquium activity. The meeting
was a
tremendous success, and delegates enjoyed not only lively mathematical
dialogue
and debate but also the local and abundant culture of the area.
Thanks!
On behalf of all the Colloquium participants, I extend thanks to Aisling
McCluskey of the Department of Mathematics, NUI(Galway)
and to Paul Gartside (Oxford) for their efforts in organizing
this memorable week - AH.
