Introduction
Continuing on with the successful series of colloquia previously held in
Galway and Oxford during 1997-98, it was the pleasant task of the General Topology
Research Group at the Queen's University of Belfast to host this year's 2nd
Belfast Topology Colloquium = 3rd Galway Topology Colloquium. Although aimed primarily at
bringing together reseachers with similar interests from the U.K., Ireland, and Western
Europe, I was delighted that the Colloquium also attracted an itinerant New Zealander from
Auckland, a Bulgarian working in Helsinki, and the main invited speaker, Shura
Arhangel'skii from Moscow State University.
Apart altogether from the genuine informality, an abiding feature of these
colloquia has been their appeal to, and active participation by, young research students.
I am pleased to report that this September's event was deemed a success in this
regard.
Thanks
My sincere thanks to my stalwart co-organisers, Alan Hanna and Brian
McMaster, for their courier-like efforts, most particularly in arranging transport, when
needed, for various participants. Thanks are due also to Sheila O'Brien (QUB), for her
invaluable assistance with accommodation matters and for providing copious quantities of
tea, coffee, and scones, and to Michael Gormley (QUB), who was the ever-willing and
obliging conference gopher! Finally, I must acknowledge the generous financial support
from the London Mathematical Society.
