From: Timothy Porter
Date: June 24, 2003
Subject: Research Officer at Bangor

UNIVERSITY OF WALES, BANGOR
SCHOOL OF INFORMATICS
MATHEMATICS DIVISION

Research Officer (Fractafolds, their geometry and topology)

Salary: £18,265 - £20,311 (on R&A Grade 1A) p.a.

Applications are invited for the above Leverhulme funded Pilot Project post available for a period of 10 months.

Based in the Mathematics Division of the School of Informatics, you will work on the problem of identifying a class of topological spaces that bear something of the same relationship to certain well structured fractal spaces as manifolds bear to Euclidean spaces. This is a pilot project to evaluate various candidate classes of spaces for 'fractafold' status. The candidate spaces are fractal, but also are, in various different ways 'homogeneously fractal'. The test for success will be indications that a possible fractal analogue of differential geometry can be applied to the study of these spaces. Thus you will study the various classes of candidate spaces to see if the development of such a 'differential geometry' on fractals imposes extra conditions on them or distinguishes between the different candidate classes.

Dependent on the success of this initial testing, it is hoped that a full-scale project lasting a further two years will be awarded. One of your tasks will be to assist the project coordinator in the preparation of full grant applications.

You should possess a strong mathematical background (PhD) with research experience in one or more of the following areas: fractals; algebraic, geometric or differential topology; areas of analysis, or differential geometry; category theory; or certain relevant areas of mathematical physics (finite approximation theory, discrete differential manifolds, etc.) or theoretical computer science (digital topology, constructive analysis, etc.).

Application forms and further particulars should be obtained by contacting Human Resources, University of Wales, Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 2DG;

Please quote reference number 03-2/231 when applying. Closing date for applications: Friday 25th July, 2003. Interviews will be held in early September, 2003.

Informal enquiries can be made by contacting Professor T. Porter

Subject: Research Assistant: Digital Topoloy and Geometry

Post-Doctoral Research Assistant: Digital Topology and Geometry

Applications are invited for a Post Doctoral Research Assistant at The University of Leeds to work on an EPSRC funded project "Digital Topology and Geometry: An Axiomatic Approach, with Applications to GIS and Spatial Reasoning". This is a joint project with Imperial College, London, where the Principal Investigator is Dr Mike Smyth.

The post will be based at the School of Computing, University of Leeds, where there is a well-established research group in spatial reasoning. There will be close collaboration with researchers at Imperial College, and also with the Geographic Information Systems research group at Keele University.

The post is available from 1st January 2001, but it may be possible to agree a later starting date. The appointment is for a fixed term of three years.

The principal aims of the project are

1. To develop an axiomatic theory of geometry that admits as models discrete spaces as well as classical continuous spaces such as Euclidean spaces.

2. To produce topological and geometric structures which can be used as the basis of computational descriptions of natural phenomena. Applications in the areas of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial reasoning in artificial inteligence (AI) will be investigated.

3. To extend digital topology as used in image analysis to a theory of digital geometry.

4. To design and implement algorithms within the developed digital geometry for tasks such as convex hull and Delauny triangulation.

The research assistant will work largely on the applications of the geometric theory including the development of algorithms and the evaluation of the suitablility of the theory to problems in areas such as spatial reasoning in AI, GIS and image analysis. One phase of the project will focus on applications to multi-resolution spatial data: the description of geometric structure at a variety of levels of detail.

Candidates should have, or be about to complete a PhD in a relevant area of Computer Science, Mathematics, or Artificial Intelligence. Candidates are not expected to be familiar with all of the application areas mentioned above, but suitable research experience in one of the following areas would be useful: spatial reasoning, computational geometry, theory of image analysis, computer graphics, formal aspects of GIS. Applications are also welcome from candidates whose main experience has been in a relevant area of topology or geometry.

Details of the formal aplication procedure will be available shortly, but anyone interested in this post should contact Dr John Stell.

Subject: Graduate Studies in Saskatoon

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that our department has money to support graduate students from Canada or from abroad, at the Master's or Ph.D. level. We invite you to advertise in your institutions and encourage suitable candidates to apply.

Details about our graduate program, the funding, application forms and deadlines may be found on our department's webpage

http://math.usask.ca

There, you will also find short research descriptions of the various faculty, and more detailed information on the individual homepages.

In particular, our Algebra Group has been very active in the last few years, and will continue to be so. The main interests of the Algebra Group are: Real Algebraic Geometry and Semialgebraic Geometry, Quadratic Form Theory, Valuation Theory and its various applications, Model Theory of Fields (Valued Fields, Ordered Fields, Hardy Fields), Ordered Algebraic Structures, and further related topics.

We have had two ongoing algebra seminars in the last couple of years. Last year we held a "Geometric Algebra" seminar based on Artin's book, to learn about orthogonal geometries and the structure of orthogonal groups. Other topics of the algebra seminars were: Hardy Fields, Local Uniformization, Power Series Fields and Kaplansky Theory.

We also had a Seminar in Real Algebraic Geometry, focusing on Schmuedgen's Theorem and its various generalizations, Kadison Dubois Theorems, Polya's and Putinar's Theorems.

In the seminars open questions for further research are often presented and discussed, and graduate students are encouraged to lecture. In addition to this we have the Department Colloquium, in which visitors, faculty or graduate students lecture to the whole department.

Last summer we hosted the big International Conference and Workshop on Valuation Theory. This March we had a very interesting short conference (the Colloquiumfest), with Schmuedgen, Pfister, Powers, Broecker, Dickmann and Lichtman as participants from abroad.

We often invite visitors for short or long term research visits and the general atmosphere is very supportive of research.

In addition to the graduate teaching fellowship or scholarship money that the graduate students would get, they can earn money through marking, or working in our Math Help Center.

Several interesting graduate courses are offered every year, please check our calendar on the internet.

Finally, Saskatoon is a very pleasant city, with lots of nature around and a fair amount of cultural events. The Campus of our university is one of the nicest in North America. Saskatoon is also a rather inexpensive place to live, so usually the funding we provide covers a moderate way of living for the students.

Yours,

There are three choices given and the following is a quotation from the application: "The selectors will look favourably on candidates who have taken the initiative to identify appropriate places at which to carry their research" (and there is also a question of the person one wants to work with).

I would be happy to hear from set-theorists and set-theoretic topologists who would like to apply for the fellowship to be used at the University of East Anglia. Please note that the deadline for applications is October 13th.
