Report on the 4th annual
Stokes Modelling Workshop

NUI Galway, 6 - 9 June, 2017

MI-NET         Stokes

The Stokes Modelling week took place at NUI Galway in June 2017.

Where are the best places to put rain-fall radar systems? How do you pack a catheter? Can you create a 3D images from 2D photos? Where are convergent rivers likely to flood? And how do you get ketchup from a bottle? These were the questions posed to teams of students from all over Ireland and the UK, who gathered at NUI Galway for the Stokes Modelling Workshop, hosted by the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, 6-9 June.

This was the 4th Modelling Workshop, organised by the Stokes Cluster for Applied Mathematics. For the first time, the event was funded by the "Mathematics for Industry Network COST Action, and problems were posed by partners in MET Eireann, Medtronic and IBM Research.

The Workshop had 40 registered participants including graduate students (funded by MI-NET) and undergraduate students (funded by the Stokes Cluster).

Stokes Modelling

Participants were supported in their modelling work by our team of experienced mentors: John Donohue (MACSI, University of Limerick); Artur Gower (University of Manchester); Luca Manzari (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm); Doireann O'Kiely (University of Oxford); and Thi Ngoc Tuoi Vo (MACSI, University of Limerick). In addition, Fergus McAuliffe (iCRAG, UCD) will deliver a workshop on science communication.

Stokes Mentors

Reports:

The workshop participants worked in small groups on problems posed by industry partners.

  1. The Meeting of the Rivers
  2. Feasibility of creating a mathematical model to determine hoop dimensions
  3. Mapping 3D Objects using a single camera.
  4. Designing an optimal weather radar network for Ireland.
  5. The role of rheology in everyday fluid flow.
